R. Field & Son "Society of Arts" Microscope

Description

The microscope is an early "Society of Arts" prize winning pattern with a presentation engraving. The instrument is made from brass with a splayed Y-foot engraved "R. Field & Son Birmingham." The pillar ends in an inclination joint which allows the microscope to be tilted for observation. Coarse focusing functions by rack work, while fine focusing is achieved by thumbscrew at the back of the body tube. The demountable body tube is engraved "Presented to Walter Smith Brook by his fellow pupils at the Collegiate School Huddersfield as a mark of their affection and esteem. Midsummer 1861". The fixed square stage has a movable slide fence on which to balance the specimen. There is also a substage iris diaphragm with 3 apertures and a substage mirror. The fitted oak case with ring handle and a lock but the instrument does not come with a key.
Condition:

Cosmetically: The plano-concave mirror has blemishes and the brass has some tarnish.
Mechanically: The nosepiece has a missing a lever but the microscope is functional.
