Another Racer Gone
NASCAR’s 1993 season took another tragic turn in July. Davey Allison, who battled Kulwicki for the championship the previous year, was killed in a helicopter accident at Talladega Superspeedway. Allison won 19 races in his career, including the 1992 Daytona 500.
In the season’s final race in Atlanta, Rusty Wallace earned his 10th victory of the year, while Dale Earnhardt captured his sixth championship. As a tribute to Kulwicki and Allison, Wallace and Earnhardt ran a side by side Polish victory lap after finishing the race. Earnhardt held a flag with Kulwicki’s No. 7, while Wallace held a flag with Allison’s No. 28.
