Welcome

What are artists' books? Simply put, an artists' book is an investigation of the book as form. Typically handmade and of a limited edition, artists' books vary significantly in their materials, structure, and subject matter. They may feature handstiched bindings and letterpress printing, be bound in wire, or make use of a unique paper folding techniques. The sheer variety of elements provide artists and writers opportunity for both visual and textual exploration.

J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte collects, preserves and catalogs artists' books, with a special focus on works created by North Carolina-based artists.  Please note that this website exhibits only a small sample of our large collection. We encourage researchers to contact us, and/or schedule a visit to Special Collections & University Archives on the 10th floor of Atkins Library.
